Last week, our community witnessed a powerful example of how highly trained EMS professionals and coordinated emergency medical partnerships protect lives every day.
Joe and his wife, Terry, recently moved to Sand Lake to be closer to their grandchildren and begin a new chapter surrounded by family. Just days ago, that chapter took an unexpected turn when Joe experienced a sudden, life-threatening cardiac emergency. When Sand Lake Ambulance paramedics Adam and Chris arrived, they quickly recognized that Joe’s heart rate had fallen to just 20 beats per minute, critically low and immediately dangerous. In medical emergencies like this, every second matters.
Our paramedics initiated advanced cardiac care on scene, working rapidly to stabilize Joe’s heart rhythm and blood pressure. During the response, Sand Lake Ambulance received support from Dr. Hayashi and Dr. Halstein of Albany Medical Center’s Emergency Department, who also responded to assist. Together, our EMS team and these skilled physicians worked seamlessly to protect Joe’s breathing, circulation, and cardiac function.
Thanks to prompt recognition, advanced training, and coordinated emergency intervention, Joe was safely transported to the hospital, where he underwent a successful procedure to receive a permanent pacemaker. He is now recovering, smiling, and looking forward to spending more time with the family he moved here to be near, exactly as it should be.
